As an independent card game creator or as a player, you know as much as I do that turning a great idea into a successful game is no easy feat.
So how do you tell the difference between a game that's gathering dust on the shelf and one that's becoming a gamer's favorite?
In this article I will tell you about some tips that I discovered during my creations.
1. A striking theme:
As I have already talked about in other articles and in my videos, the first step to creating a card game is to have a theme that sticks out to players and immerses them in your game. This theme will also allow you to find the effects of your future cards more easily.
The most important thing is to create an atmosphere that makes players want to dive into the game again and again.
I can notably cite the excellent “Paléo” which is my favorite reference.
2. Fluid and fun game mechanics:
Nobody likes to get lost in incomprehensible rules. Your game mechanics should be intuitive, easy to grasp and above all, fun!
The goal is to create a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience , where players focus on enjoying the game rather than deciphering the rules.
3. Interactions that spice up the game:
Card games are often about strategy and competition, but don't forget the social aspect!
Encourage interactions between players , whether through alliances, betrayals, or negotiations. A little spice in the relationships between players will stimulate them even more!
4. A balance that ensures suspense:
No one likes to lose consistently or win too easily. Make sure your game offers a balanced challenge to all players, regardless of their level.
Good balance guarantees thrilling games where victory is decided until the last card.
I invite you to read the previous article that I published which talks about balancing in card games.
5. Foolproof replayability:
A good card game is like a good book: you want to reread it again and again. Add surprise elements, rule variations or modules to make each game different and surprising.
A game that thrills is a game that remains engraved in memories. Provoke emotions in your players : the joy of victory, the frustration of defeat, the surprise of a turnaround...
The more intense the emotions, the more memorable the gaming experience will be and therefore the more your players will want to relive these emotions and start a new game.
6. A look that impresses:
Don't neglect the visual aspect of your game! Original illustrations, careful design and quality cards will make players want to collect them and proudly show them to their friends.
7. An adapted game duration:
Find the right balance between a game that is too short and leaves players wanting more and a long game that puts them to sleep . Adapt the game duration to the target audience and the type of game you offer.
For further :
Don't hesitate to test your game with friends, colleagues or strangers to get their impressions and improve your creation.
Participate in gaming festivals to promote your game and meet other passionate creators who will give you insightful feedback.
Don't give up when faced with obstacles! All creations require time, patience and perseverance (especially in the face of “failures”).
By following these tips, you will significantly increase your chances of creating a card game that will make an impact and become a game night staple. So, grab your pencils, your cards, and may creativity be with you!
